Christmas Concert

December 12, 2017

The Christmas Concert on Monday 11 December rounded off the musical term in style. The Great Hall was once again heaving with an audience delighted by the angelic choral singing of Paulina Voices (cello accompaniment by Giulia in the VIII and a trio of angels), an octet of cellos and soprano Brooke in the VIII in a Villa-Lobos classic, as well as the usual Christmassy favourites. The concert was dedicated to the late Derek Bourgeois, whose witty ‘Serenade’ was played joyously by Concert Band. But the highlight was undoubtedly the Symphony Orchestra’ scintillating account of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, an orchestral masterpiece done full justice by Leigh O’Hara and the extraordinary players he conducted.
