Dr Stephen Heyworth Visits St Paul’s

January 23, 2015

This week, the Classics Society here at St Paul’s was delighted to welcome Dr Stephen Heyworth, Bowra Fellow and tutor at Wadham College, Oxford, who spoke to a group of over 100 avid classicists on ‘Ovid’s Metamorphoses as an epic of change’. Dr Heyworth demonstrated interesting parallels between Ovid’s famous work and Virgil’s Aeneid and made girls question whether this unpredictable collection of myths can be classified as ‘epic’, given its lack of unity. The talk was particularly thought-provoking to those Paulinas studying Book Three in their AS course, as it allowed them to see past the complexity of the language and gain a broader understanding of the Metamorphoses as whole text.
