Last Saturday, St Paul’s Girls’ School won the Manchester Schools debating competition. Josie Dallas (VII) and Freya Wilson (VI) successfully argued for the selective removal of memory against three very strong teams in the final, which also included Jackie Li (VII) and Antonia Ruddle (VII). Jackie was invited to speak at an ESU showcase debate on gender equality in politics and swayed a knowledgeable audience with her passionate case for all-women short-lists. At SOAS Schools a couple of weeks ago, Josie Dallas and Flora Spielman (VII) looked as if they had won the final but were denied when the judges split 3/2 against them. Finally, in the qualifying rounds for the three major competitions later this term, the school has advanced the maximum number of debating teams to the final stage; this is an unprecedented accomplishment. Congratulations to Kathryn Cussons and Armaghan Hallajian (VIII), Jackie, Josie, Antonia & Flora (VII) and Freya and Bella Forristal (VI).
