The St Paul’s VI English scholars took a trip to see The Merchant of Venice at the Globe on Sunday 3 May. Although girls gave up a weekend afternoon for the outing just before their GCSEs began, they would no doubt agree that it was very worthwhile. The play, which starred Jonathan Pryce as Shylock and Pryce’s daughter Phoebe as Shylock’s daughter Jessica, has had excellent reviews. Characters many previously considered rather dull – such as Gobbo – came alive in this production, and the forced baptism at the end gave the show a raw gravity. The play certainly left the girls with more to think about as they head into their exams.
