Latin Study Day

February 2, 2015

On Friday, Latin AS students at St Paul’s enjoyed a day of classics lectures on their set-texts, Cicero’s De Imperio and Ovid’s The Metamorphoses, at Francis Holland School. The first lecturer, Dr Inigo Gildenhard of King’s College, Cambridge, focused on Cicero’s characterisation of Pompey both as a strident military leader and as a softer human being. The girls were encouraged to consider the historical backdrop that influenced Cicero and to notice how he imbued his speech with subtle self-praise. Fiachra MacGorain of UCL then introduced students to artistic interpretations of the detailed transformations and spoke on the recurrent theme of vision and perception in Book Three of The Metamorphoses.
