On Tuesday evening, we had the pleasure of hearing Yara Rodrigues Fowler reading and discussing her book ‘Stubborn Archivist’. In her debut novel, Yara uses a combination of poetry and prose as well as Portuguese to illuminate the experience of growing up with a mixed identity. Yara discussed the process of writing a novel in two languages, revealing that even those who are not bilingual possess different versions of language. In groups, Yara encouraged us to reflect on how we store our memories and how that can influence our creative process. The talk finished with each of us writing our own stories using family memories.
