Last Wednesday, the school celebrated Chinese New Year with a variety of activities, lectures and, of course, food! In the morning assembly we learned more about Chinese culture through the famous ‘Yellow River’ piece and an impressive kung fu demonstration. Lunchtime saw Chinese checkers competitions, martial arts master classes and calligraphy workshops, with traditional 红包 given to all participants. Finally, Professor Robert Ash of SOAS gave a talk on ‘Chinese Population and Migration’, which provided a fascinating cross-curricular insight into China’s one child policy. Overall, both Chinese and non-Chinese students alike were offered a glimpse into the country’s rich and varied culture just in time for the year of the rooster.
