The annual Christmas Concert is the jewel of St Paul’s concerts, with even Old Paulinas unable to resist coming back every year to watch. Here, Georgi, VI, tells us more:
The concert opened with extracts from Mendelssohn’s magical ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ featuring two superb vocal soloists, Anna and Tasie, along with beautiful orchestral playing, particularly in the difficult woodwind section. This was followed by a large scale performance of ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ by Mussorgsky/Ravel. The second half featured the beautiful ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ by Britten which had the entire hall transfixed and transported. The concert finished with ‘A Christmas Carol Fantasy’, the classic Gardner carols and ‘Ding, dong, merrily on high’ – a truly fast and magical note on which to end this term!
