It has been a busy and exciting half term for our St Paul’s debating teams.
Our U15 debaters have had some tremendous recent success. Kiersten & Anya, V, topped the qualifying at the Debate Mate U18 tournament, won LSE Juniors, and stormed home in the London qualifying round for ICYD, the International Competition for Young Debaters. Also joining the top 5 speakers were Maya and Amelie, LV, and Tanya, V. At Imperial Juniors we had two teams in the Gold Final, comprising Maya, Emily and Clementine, LV, and Christina, V. Many UIV are showing great promise. At Imperial, Eleanore and Rosanagh came fifth, with Eleanore also coming second best novice at LSE.
The senior debaters are approaching the main events of the season. Victoria, VII, and Kitty, VI, came joint second-best speakers at KCL U18. They performed superbly in the grand-final, only losing to an international team. They and Creagh, VI, advanced to the regional final of the ESU Mace competition, successfully arguing for compulsory vaccinations. A very successful half term was rounded off with four teams qualifying for Oxford finals’ day at the most competitive West London qualifying round in years, held here at St Paul’s on Wednesday. The three debaters above will be joined by Isobel and Abby, VI, and Lucy, Sara and Rachel, VIII, at finals day at the Oxford Union on 14 March.
