English Debating Champions

March 30, 2016

Bella Forristal and Freya Wilson (VII) have won the English Speaking Union Mace, the oldest schools’ debating competition, for the first time in the school’s history. They defeated five other schools in their semi-final by successfully arguing that government funding for the arts should be limited to art that conveys a social or political message and proposed ‘This house regrets the voluntourism culture’ in the final. Facing us were a Westminster team with two years’ England experience, but our rigorous arguments and dynamic engagement with the opposition won them a unanimous verdict from the judges. The preparation needed for finals day was intense and the girls thoroughly deserved their success in earning our first national title.
