Joanna Bourke Visits St Paul’s

February 6, 2015

Prolific feminist historian Joanna Bourke of Birkbeck College, London, addressed History Society about the history of sexual violence in film last week. She addressed and challenged the rape myths that leak into cinematography and outlined the changes that the image of the ‘rapist’ has undergone, drawing on telling examples from history. The talk, by highlighting the importance of historical context, undoubtedly enhanced girls’ understanding of this very current issue and taught important – more general – lessons for the historian.
