Languages week

September 27, 2019

To celebrate European Day of Languages the modern foreign languages department hosted a number of exciting events across the week beginning with an assembly on the art of translation. On Monday 23 September St Paul’s hosted a literary translation workshop by Russian-English translator Robert Chandler, giving students a unique opportunity to discuss the intricacies of translating names and nuances. On Thursday, the Marble was abuzz as both students and staff participated in a ‘flash translation’, attempting to translate the first chapter of Harry Potter sentence by sentence into as many different languages as possible. St Paul’s is lucky to have huge linguistic diversity, with more than fifty languages spoken at home, so to see students joining together to celebrate this variety of languages and cultures has been really special.
