Maths Talk

December 4, 2019

Recently, mathematicians in the VII had the opportunity to attend a talk by Dr Kevin Buzzard, Professor of Pure Mathematics at Imperial College who specialises in number theory. We learnt about the birth of mathematics as we know it today, and Giuseppe Peano’s axioms on defining numbers; it’s actually more difficult than we thought to fully prove seemingly simple ‘facts’ like ‘2 + 2 = 4’. We also discovered how computer algorithms can be used to build mathematical proofs from pure logic, a quickly developing and cutting-edge field, and had the opportunity to ask further questions at the end. Overall we found the talk fascinating and everyone took something new away from it!
