Connell Guides Essay Prize Winner

March 23, 2015

Many congratulations to Eleanor Winn in the VII who has won the Connell Guides Essay Prize 2015 with her essay on Jez Butterworth’s play Jerusalem. Philip Pullman, award-winning novelist and, coincidentally, Eleanor’s favourite author, judged the competition and selected Eleanor’s essay, which you can read here, from over 200 entries. Commenting on his choice, Pullman said, ‘What stood out for me in the work of Eleanor Winn was the kind of ease and authority that we see in the performance of a gifted singer or ball-player – a complete familiarity with the medium, a way of presenting the material that seems effortless… When we see a gift like that, the only thing to do is enjoy it’.
