VIII Play 2015

March 10, 2015

On Wednesday 4 March, the first performance of this year’s VIII play, The Laramie Project, took place in the school’s Celia Johnson Theatre. The play is based on the murder of a young gay boy, Matthew Shepard, who was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. The cast consisted of eight Paulines and five Paulinas who, directed by Ms Debney of the girls’ school’s drama department, performed a moving and truly spectacular piece, tackling controversial and sensitive topics regarding hate crimes, society and homosexuals in 1990s western America. The performance was split up into a series of interviews, enabling every character’s point of view to be vividly expressed and giving theatrical flow to the journalistic and historical material.
