Preti Taneja Reading and Q&A

December 17, 2019

Literary Society recently had the pleasure of hearing Preti Taneja reading and discussing her award-winning book ‘We That Are Young’. In her debut novel, Preti reworks Shakespeare’s King Lear into a contemporary Indian context, and during her talk Preti reflected on her experience of ‘translating’ such a weighty canonical text into a different form. This was followed by a fascinating Q&A session, where Preti detailed the tricky process of using a 400 year old play to challenge our assumptions around a ‘developing’ country and the politics of including transliterated Hindi without an English glossary. Many thanks to Preti Taneja for coming in to speak to us and to Mr Donkor for organising her reading.
