When you hear the word Thaxted what do you think of? Well, Thaxted is the name of the tune for ‘I Vow to Thee, My Country’ and is the beautiful Essex village where Holst lived while he was Director of Music here at St Paul’s. In 1916 he took several girls to perform at the newly formed Thaxted Festival and 100 years later we decided to pay them another visit where we were greeted by Old Paulinas and Holst experts. The concert was performed to a packed church but perhaps the most moving movement was the final rendition of ‘I Vow to Thee’ sung by the choir and audience accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra. Those of us who were there can now say we have performed and sung Thaxted in Thaxted.
