At the beginning of July St Paul’s held its inaugural Summer Piano Workshops. The Teachers’ Day was led by Anthony Williams, renowned pianist, musical educator and author of ‘The Piano Teachers Survival Guide’, and explored topics such as ‘the philosophy of teaching’ and ‘putting musical playing first’. On the Students’ Day Alexander Hawkins led an energised and challenging improvisation workshop for 28 young pianists from local primary, junior and secondary schools, all while playing his melodica! The day concluded with performances of Verdi’s La Donna e Mobile, Mozart’s Minuet in F, Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend and the action-packed Batman, all for multiple pianos and pianists. The Great Hall was a buzz of musical excitement and the sight of 21 pianists at seven pianos was an impressive spectacle! The final treat of the day was a superb performance given by BBC Young Musician of the Year 2010, Lara Melda. Her playing was sublime and wonderfully inspiring for all the young pianists.
