HoST at Mercers’ Hall

HoST at Mercers’ Hall

The Head of School Team set off across London to the Mercers’ Hall for a guided tour and tea with the prefects from St Paul’s School.

After catching a glimpse of St Paul’s Cathedral, we headed inside the building, which was originally a hospital for the ill and infirm, as well as being the birthplace of Thomas Becket. We also learned about the work of Sir Thomas Gresham, who founded Gresham College, the oldest higher education institution in London, in 1597 (after passing his younger years at St Pauls’ School!).

The Mercers’ Company, originally traders of expensive fabrics such as velvet and silk, founded our school in 1904, so it was very interesting to learn more about the members of the company and their work beyond SPGS and SPS. We learned so much about the history of our schools and of the Mercers – and the cakes we were treated to after were delicious!
