Recent debating success

The debaters have had some resounding successes in the last few weeks.

Mace

On Thursday 19 January, our Mace teams, comprised of Eppie (VIII), Maya (VII) and Anya (VIII), expertly assisted by former Mace winner Anna (VII), defended the motion that sporting events should not be hosted by countries with a poor record of human rights. They were brilliant, and after a nerve-racking one-hour deliberation by the judges (that’s how tough it was!) were declared the best team. We wish them luck for the regional final!

Imperial Schools

Saturday 21 January saw our teams populating the top rooms again: Maya and Anya not only topped the qualifying on full points as a team, but went on to win the whole tournament, finishing best and second-best individual speakers too. Cassia and Rosanagh (VI) broke to the silver final, while Eppie (VIII) and Izzy (VI) made the bronze final, as well as Christiane (VI) and Francesca (V), who eventually won it. Another day to celebrate!

French debating

On Tuesday 31 January, our school hosted, for the 12th consecutive year, the Central London French debating competition for Y12 and Y13 students. We had the greatest ever number of participants, with 52 teams from 28 different schools. Heated debates took place, in proper Gallic fashion, on mandatory voting, energy prices, as well as sports and human rights. The Great Hall and Dining Hall were abuzz with French chatter. Our teams fought valiantly, with Carla and Jasmine (VIII) finishing second in their pool, and Aamani and Sophia (VIII) going through to the regional final. We wish them bonne chance
