The Chinese department put together an exciting range of activities to mark the Lunar New Year. Anika, V, summarises this year’s celebrations:

The Year of the Ox was kick-started on Monday morning by a Chinese New Year assembly given by students on famous Chinese foods and their backstories. On Tuesday evening we had the highly anticipated Caribbean-Chinese style cook-along with celebrity chef Jonathan Phang; this also doubled as an event for LGBT History Month. Wednesday and Thursday brought two more talks. Wednesday’s talk covered career options using Chinese by Mr Jon Edwards (Chief Representative, Beijing Representative Office, London Stock Exchange Group). Thursday’s talk covered traditional Chinese poetry and was by Professor Jonathan Stalling of the University of Oklahoma. Many students learning Chinese in class would have already been trying to perfect English Jueju (a complex traditional Chinese poetry form) during lessons; the talk was a wonderful way to close off the Chinese New Year celebrations at school.
