Dance Show 2026

Dance Show 2026

On Tuesday 3 February the school’s much awaited annual Dance Show took place, with students from across all year groups lighting up the stage in a blur of colour and choreography, showcasing their skills in many different styles.

Act One was an energetic and beautiful expression of different world cultures, the audience marvelling at Scottish Highland, three classical Indian styles of Kathak, Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam, and Contemporary, Jazz and Ballet. Act Two was a series of dances under the theme Decades set to music spanning almost 100 years.

Dance unites people. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the Dance Show, as whilst each style and dynamic expresses something unique, running through it all is a shared love of dancing. Rehearsing together naturally creates friendships because of our shared interest, shared performance nerves and shared sense of fulfilment, no matter what discipline we come from. Dance unites across cultures and, importantly for us, unites across year groups and shows a side of people you don’t get to see in the classroom. Having been part of it every year since the MIV, it is my favourite event at the school.

In our younger years, we choreographed dances with friends in our living rooms to our favourite songs, performing them nervously in front of the older girls. This year, it was our turn to audition younger dancers for our choreography in Decades. I felt a real sense of pride: seeing the dances come together in the final weeks, watching all the dances I’d choreographed from the wings and hugging the girls as they came off stage.

A particular favourite was the 2010s Musical Theatre dance I choreographed to Someone in the crowd from La La Land. The upbeat rhythms, and the big travelling steps made it hard not to smile when performing. The fulfillment of performing in front of a full audience and spotting our friends in the crowd meant we were beaming on stage, and I had a wonderful last performance at SPGS.

Our friendship began back in 2020 when we danced our first ever duet together. As fresh-eyed MIVs we had eagerly signed up for the Dance Show, becoming firm friends through hours of rehearsals as we painstakingly choreographed to Adele’s Melody. Fast forward to 3 February 2026, through a further six years of melodies, duets and dance shows, and we performed our final ever duet to Nina Simone’s Feeling Good. What we have loved about the show is how everyone’s talent is celebrated, that we all simply share a common love for dance and that there’s joy in just dancing together.
