U19 Girls’ Chess Championships

U19 Girls’ Chess Championships

On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 April, Eugenia (VI), Sohana (VI) and Mia (LV) represented SPGS in the U19 Girls' National Chess Finals hosted at St Catherine's School. This is the crowning event of the chess calendar where the top 10 teams from the country compete in a round robin two-day event of highly competitive chess.

It was an event full of nail-biting drama, nerves and resilience where our team finally emerged as the National Champions after nine rounds of a high standard chess. Throughout the competition there was almost no margin of difference between us and the runners up: North London Collegiate School, with the championship decided on the head-to-head result between both the teams in which SPGS emerged victorious.

We are extremely proud of this first national championship trophy for the school, after near misses in the last few years. This achievement embodies the fantastic advancement of chess at SPGS, and we are confident to build on this superb result in coming years.
