Upon our arrival we headed to some lava caves. It felt frightening at times, from the narrow walls, low ceilings and our guides telling us to all turn our headlights off and sit in pitch darkness at one point!
From craters, waterfall complexes and a windy national park, day two had some amazing photo opportunities with stunning views. The highlight by far was seeing a hot spring spitting water 10m into the air!
Day three was the most packed, starting with a lava museum where we learnt the history of Iceland’s geology and structure. We then visited the gigantic waterfall Skógafoss with such a powerful spray that we were soaked from far away! Next we trekked up a glacier with hiking boots and pickaxes, learning about its formation on the way. Another exciting experience was seeing real lava formed in a protected lava chamber – we had to wear glasses to protect our eyes from the heat. The day ended in another breath-taking waterfall that we could walk behind and see the plunge pool beneath.
The fourth day was a one-of-a-kind experience: a freezing underground glacial tunnel. We spent hours driving up to the entrance in a monster truck and walked through the passageways inside. Our trip concluded with a visit to Reykjavík and its interactive Perlan Museum complete with an indoor 100m ice cave, 360° northern lights planetarium show and many exhibits on Iceland’s geology, history and wildlife. After a couple of hours shopping in the city where many of us tried traditional Icelandic crepes, we flew back to London.
Throughout the trip in every place we visited, our guides taught us fascinating things about the culture, lifestyle, history and geography of Iceland. It was a truly unforgettable experience and one of the most unique countries I’ve been to.
