German trip to Bonn and Cologne

The first week of the summer holidays saw a group of MIV and UIV in action on a trip to Bonn and Cologne in Germany.

Fourty-four students and five staff set out on a coach and the ferry via Dunkerque to the beautiful Rhineland. The drive was easy and we stayed in a very comfortable youth hostel on the outskirts of Bonn. During that week we explored, of course, Cologne Cathedral and the Lindt Chocolate Museum with a display on growing cocoa, and we enjoyed a boat trip on the Rhine. Our trip had a science focus, and we visited the planetarium in Erkrath, the Neanderthal Museum with a fascinating guided tour, the Aquazoo in Löbbeke and the very stylish Mathematics Museum Arithmeum in Bonn. Of course we honoured Bonn’s most famous son, Beethoven, with a guided tour through the house of his birth and a great talk by the curator, actively involving our students and eliciting their musical knowledge (impressive!). Of course HariBO (manufactured in Bonn) played a part as well as German ice cream and a fabulous dinner at the Hard Rock Café in Cologne. The Paulinas were great, immersed themselves in German culture and food, and we had a cheerful and sunny week. I would like to thank the staff that accompanied us and made the trip so smooth: Dr Mathison, Dr Hughes, Ms Moran and Ms Al Kaaby.
