MIV and new VII trip to St Paul’s Cathedral

MIV and new VII trip to St Paul’s Cathedral

On Monday 5 February the MIV and new VII went to St Paul’s Cathedral.

The trip started with a short 20-minute break before we entered the cathedral and were put into groups with Y9s from St Paul’s School. As we entered, we were astonished by the jaw-dropping architecture and soon enough, the tour started with a look at the tombs, especially the one of Sir Christopher Wren, who had designed the cathedral. As we visited the ground floor, we ventured through tombs, chapels and much more. At last, we climbed the many stairs that led to the Whispering Gallery. There, we looked down upon the magnificent architecture, before again climbing the numerous (and slightly claustrophobic!) steps to the Stone Gallery. This was the moment we had all been waiting for. The iconic view across London was magnificent, stretching out before us. We were allowed to take pictures and took many souvenirs of this wonderful trip home with us that night. Thank you very much to Mr Hitchcock and all the teachers that came and planned this memorable experience!

On Monday 5 February all the MIV students and the new VII went on an eagerly awaited trip to St Paul’s Cathedral. I was very excited as it has a strong connection with our school, and I was going for the first time. Upon arrival, we went up to the Whispering Gallery where we could hear our voices echoing around the walls. We then descended down to the crypt, where we saw tombs of famous pioneers, such as the master architect, Christopher Wren himself! I was in awe of the beautiful ceiling, which featured engravings and religious paintings, mostly from the Bible. Following a brief visit to the Quire and Altar and after climbing many stairs, we reached the balcony of the dome. It was a breathtaking view and I realised just how high up we were – 111 metres to be exact.

Finally, we all settled down facing the choir for the evening’s main event: the Evensong. It was astonishing to take in the grandeur of this 17th century building. As the Evensong commenced, I was entranced by the incredible voices of the choir, made up of students from both SPGS and SPS. Full of tradition, it was such an incredible evening that I couldn’t believe how quickly it was over.

Overall, it was an unforgettable trip, and I will always treasure this special memory. Sharing it with my friends made it even more meaningful, and I look forward to more exciting opportunities and adventures with them in the future!
