Beauty and the Beast

Having auditioned in March for our favourite time of the year (the musical!), 51 members of SPGS and SPS embarked on a rehearsal process that ended in four performances of Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

With all tickets selling out in under eight minutes, the musical in our Celia Johnson Theatre is a highly anticipated bi-annual event and this year’s cast, orchestra and crew worked incredibly hard, as well as enjoying ourselves enormously, to offer and achieve a magical end product. As always, we were very lucky to be led by the invaluable advice, direction and training from our director Miss Foley, musical director Miss Pegler and, new this year, assistant director Ms McKeown. With this year’s production also including an entire array of kitchen utensils (cheese grater, whisk, sugar bowl and egg timer to name a few), a golden ball gown, a pyrotechnic display and electromagnetically controlled rose petals, it also could not have gone ahead without the amazing work of Mr Wakerell and Ms Strong. The members of SPGS’ orchestra underscored the entire musical and not only did they play exquisitely to a professional level but were able to still perform once split on either side of the stage, half being conducted by a virtual Miss Pegler! It was such an amazing experience which we will never forget, especially the choreography for ‘Be Our Guest’, that I’m sure many of us will be able to perform at the drop of a hat in any given situation.
