Languages in partnership

Every Monday, a group of students across the V and VI who learn German as either their ML1 or ML2 head to Larmenier and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, which is local to SPGS.

The students are not given the opportunity to learn German whilst in primary school, so the German partnership programme allows students who are passionate about German to spread their passion to the younger children. The students not only manage to teach basic German phrases and vocabulary but allow the younger pupils to develop their confidence in another language. The students at SPGS teach through a range of methods and lessons that they plan themselves. Over the course of a few months, the students at SPGS manage to grow a connection with the younger students, who over time share their enthusiasm of German.

The French primary partnership is an opportunity for the VI to put their French knowledge into practice and teach local primary school children. I have absolutely loved being able to take part in this, and teaching little kids French has been a surprisingly effective way to both expand my own French knowledge and be able to pass it on. Preparing materials for the lesson is also a vital aspect and we have lots of fun preparing exciting exercises and games for the children to play. It provides an amazing opportunity to connect with the local primary school and it is so exciting to see the students develop. It’s such a great way to get involved with the local community while also being able to put our language skills to the test! The experience has been amazing and I look forward to it every week!

SPGS students have been going to Larmenier and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School once a week at lunchtime to teach Y5 children Latin in the Minimus programme. This partnership between the two schools started two decades ago and it’s wonderful to see it continue each year with a new group of students.
