MIV trip to The Witches

MIV trip to The Witches

On Wednesday 30 November, we (the MIV) went to see 'The Witches' in an effort to improve and learn new drama skills!

We were all filled with anticipation and as soon as I heard about the trip, I was bursting with excitement! After school, we all headed down to the dining room to have a scrumptious feast: spaghetti Bolognese with chocolate doughnuts for dessert! We waited for a while for the coaches to arrive and when they finally did, we boarded eagerly. It took about an hour to get to the National Theatre, and we ran into traffic, unfortunately, but eventually we made it! Together, we all hurried into the Olivier Theatre – one of the many theatres at the National Theatre – excited to see the musical.

The musical was fantastic! It incorporated many incredible drama skills and turned them into a magical spectacle! It was very surprising to see the clawed hands surrounding the stage move around and change colour as the witches struck their fury on their victim! The actors were expressive. The play was so intriguing; it captured so many emotions: sadness when Luke lost his parents and when you learnt that he only had nine years left to live, amusement when Bruno sang his song and when you met his real character as well as when you watched the manager of the Hotel Magnificent perform, frightening when the Grand High Witch caught the grandmother and when you met all the witches, inclusive when the Grand High Witch began conversing in rage at another actor (disguised as an audience member) that it was not okay to start playing ‘Baby Shark’ in the middle of the play and last of all, hopeful at Luke and his grandmother’s plan to capture all the witches in the world. The play was so heart warming and a twist on the story everyone knows and loves.

I sincerely believe that The Witches has helped everyone improve their drama skills and also learn to appreciate the art of drama. An example would be the bit where the Grand High Witch struck up a conversation with the actor (disguised as an audience member) as well as the other times when she randomly pointed at someone and talked to them; this helped us learn that when acting, it is not just about you doing a funny scene, you break the wall you have between you and the audience and make them fell as if they are part of the play, which is important because it can help the audience feel more involved and will cause them to focus in more and suck up every detail. Overall, The Witches was an amazing experience, and I would love to have it happen all over again!
