Creative Writing trip

Creative Writing trip

On Monday 8 April, aspiring writers in the V, VI and VII travelled to Ty Newydd Writing Centre in Wales.

After a whirlwind start to our journey, we received a warm welcome from the lovely Miriam and Tony. On the first evening, we had the chance to meet the amazing two writers who would be staying with us for the week: Mary Colson, a writer for The Royal Literary Fund and Sophie Mackintosh, best known for her Booker-Prize-nominated novel, The Water Cure. Each day, we began with two enlightening workshops where we worked with the writers on different types of writing forms and styles. In the afternoons we had free time to write and explore the area, including one very muddy walk, much to the despair of our unsuitable walking shoes! Throughout the week, we had one-on-one sessions with each of the writers, talking about our own pieces of work and gaining deeper insight into creative writing. Of course, it was not only work as we rounded off each day with heated games of cards, charades and more. Even the ghost of David Lloyd George wanted to join in on the fun! We ended the week with a reading of our own pieces of work, reciting poetry and prose. It was wonderful to hear everyone’s writing that they had worked on throughout the week. Our trip to Wales was a memorable experience and it proved to be very difficult to say goodbye.
