Game Jam

Game Jam

The day of Game Jam was probably one of the most fun and educating experiences that I have ever had.

Game Jam is a competition where you have to create an original game (code and all) that is in accordance with a set theme, this year’s was fantasy. This competition is open to all years in SPGS and SPS with MIV and UIV being in the Junior Category and the rest of the years being in the Senior Category. On the day that we were given to come into school to code our games with help from mentors, teachers and other students, we were each assigned a table to work at. There were only three teams present in the Junior category so we all shared a classroom whilst the groups of the Senior Category worked in the Great Hall.

During that Sunday, I witnessed some of the best teamwork with some people preparing presentations, some people coding and some people designing. Although we were at school from 10:00 to 17:30 (with one hour for lunch and an hour for presenting and judging) the time seemed to fly by and most of the groups in my category agreed that we could have managed our time better as we didn’t realise that five hours could be that short. Game Jam has taught me many new things such as how to use Python Arcade, expanded my knowledge of While Loops and how to simply construct a game. I would really recommend participating if you have an interest in computer science, have ideas and imagination and potentially want to become a game developer. A huge thank you to the CS Society who made this happen and all the mentors who helped us conquer our coding problems!
